# Pirates and Bandits

Diverse pirate clans and lawless raiders often lie in wait for civilian vessels in remote stretches of space. Highly mobile and patient, they are experts at setting ambushes, sometimes waiting for days for the perfect target. Their motives are simple: they will seize your cargo, or tear your ship apart for scrap, taking everything of value.

Unfortunately, the USC cannot extend its influence to every corner of the void, focusing instead on securing core planetary systems. Controlling such vast territories is impossible. As a result, all independent captains arm their ships as best they can for self-defense. High-value shipments often travel with armed escorts to deter attacks.

Destroying a pirate ship almost guarantees a valuable haul, offering greater rewards than standard mining—at a much higher risk. Some captains have turned the tables, specializing in hunting the hunters. They disguise their ships as vulnerable freighters to lure in unsuspecting bandits. When the attack begins, the "cargo ship" reveals itself as a heavily armed warship. For these hunters, pirates and their illicit goods *become* the most profitable resource.

Always stay vigilant and hone your combat skills. But remember the most important rule of survival: **if you see the battle turning against you, disengage and run.** There is no shame in living to fight another day.
